How to send a large video on WhatsApp

A clip over the limit either won’t attach or gets squeezed by the app on the way, fast and without asking. Compress video for WhatsApp yourself beforehand and you decide the size, see the quality in advance and the person gets exactly what you saved.

WhatsApp video size limit

WhatsApp adjusts these numbers from time to time. Treat them as a guide as of 2026: a 16 MB clip goes through either way.

  • Sent as a video in the chat: about 16 MB. This is the size the page sets.
  • Sent as a document: up to 2 GB, but the person gets a file to open, not a video that plays in the chat.
  • Status: short clips only, and the allowed length has changed over the years.

Why a phone video is so heavy

Phones film in 4K or 1080p at a high bitrate, so one minute takes 100 to 400 MB. A chat window shows a fraction of that detail. Compressing lowers the bitrate and, when it has to, the frame size.

What 16 MB holds

  • Half a minute: 1080p.
  • One minute: 720p, sharp on a phone.
  • Two minutes: 480p.
  • Three to five minutes: 360p, softer but fine to watch.
  • Past about ten minutes: 16 MB is too little, and the page tells you so.

Tips for a long video

  • Trim first. Every dull second you cut leaves more of the 16 MB for the part that matters.
  • If the file lands slightly over, press Squeeze harder.
  • For full quality to one person, send the original as a document.
  • Voices stay clear: the sound is copied as it is whenever there is room.

Sending from a phone or a computer

On iPhone or Android, the Share button hands the clip straight to WhatsApp. Saved instead, it waits in Downloads or Files: in the chat, tap the attachment button, choose Gallery or Document and pick it. On a computer, drag it into WhatsApp Web or the desktop app.
