How to convert video to MP4 on any device

A video from one device often won’t open on another: an iPhone MOV on Windows, an MKV on a TV, a WebM in a messenger. MP4 with H.264 picture and AAC sound plays on practically everything, so this video converter picks it by default.

What happens to MOV, MKV and WebM

  • MOV from an iPhone or a camera: instant when the picture inside is H.264. HEVC footage is re-saved as H.264.
  • MKV: H.264 picture is kept as it is. Opus or Vorbis sound is re-saved as AAC, which is quick.
  • WebM from screen recorders and websites: VP8, VP9 and AV1 don’t go into MP4, so the picture is re-saved as H.264. This takes longer.
  • The other way works too: save as WebM for a website, or MOV for a Mac.

Keep the quality you started with

Before you save, the panel shows what will happen. “Instant, same quality” means nothing is re-encoded: the streams only move into a new box. Otherwise the picture is re-saved at the source bitrate, capped at 8 Mbps for 1080p and 5 Mbps for 720p, and the difference is hard to see.

iPhone HEVC to H.264

Newer iPhones film in HEVC, which many Windows PCs, Android phones and TVs can’t play. MP4 from here is always H.264. Safari reads HEVC by itself. On Windows, Chrome and Edge may need the free “HEVC Video Extensions”, and the page tells you if so.

Make the file smaller while converting

Open the gear and set “Picture size” to 1080p, 720p or 480p. To hit an exact number of megabytes, use the video compressor instead.

What you get

  • A new file with the same name and the new extension, such as clip.mp4.
  • The first video track and the main sound. Subtitles and extra audio tracks are left out.
  • Your original file, untouched.

What it can’t open

Browsers can’t read old formats like AVI, WMV, FLV, VOB and 3GP, and the page says so when you pick one. The converter opens MP4, MOV, M4V, WebM and MKV. Re-save older files as MP4 in a desktop player such as VLC first.
