Convert WAV to MP3

A WAV is big because nothing in it is compressed. As an MP3 the same recording is about seven times smaller and still sounds right on a phone or in a car.

MP3, WAV, M4A, FLAC, OGG and more · the sound of a video too

Your privacy comes first

Your contracts, passport scans and family videos stay yours. No one but you gets to see them.

  • We don’t store your files

We don’t save them on our server: not the contract, not the video, not the photo. What you open stays yours.

How it works

  1. Open the WAVA recorder file, a mix from your music program or a CD rip. The format is detected on opening, and To already holds MP3.
  2. Keep Good or change itGood is 192 kbps. Best (320) for a finished song, Standard (128) for a voice.
  3. Save the MP3Same name, new extension: interview.wav becomes interview.mp3.

WAV to MP3 without a loss you can hear

Field recorders like the Zoom H1, music programs like Audacity or GarageBand, and CD rippers write WAV: raw sound, about 10 MB for each minute of CD-quality stereo. That is perfect for editing and awkward for everything else, so the finished file usually goes out as an MP3.

How much smaller it gets

  • Good, 192 kbps: a one-minute stereo WAV of 10.6 MB became a 1.44 MB MP3, 7.3 times smaller, in about a second.
  • Best, 320 kbps: about 2.4 MB a minute, for music you care about.
  • Standard, 128 kbps: about 1 MB a minute, plenty for a podcast or a lecture.
  • Smaller file, 64 kbps: about 0.5 MB a minute. For a single voice, switch to mono under the gear as well.

Which WAV files open

  • 16-bit and 24-bit, 44.1, 48 and 96 kHz, mono or stereo.
  • 32-bit float from audio editors, and telephone WAV (μ-law, A-law).
  • We set no size cap, and the file is not saved on our server.

Every browser can do this one

WAV needs no decoder and the MP3 encoder is built into the page, so this pair works in Chrome, Safari, Firefox and Edge, on a phone or a computer. Only Safari before version 26 stops at 15 minutes of sound. A 96 kHz file is saved at 48 kHz, the highest rate MP3 has.

Keep the WAV

  • MP3 drops sounds you are unlikely to hear. Fine for listening, not for more editing.
  • Edit, mix and master the WAV. Make the MP3 from it at the very end.
  • Making the MP3 again later? Start from the WAV, not from the old MP3.
