  3. Save itPress Save audio. The file keeps its name and gets the new extension.

How to convert audio to MP3 and other formats

People reach for an audio converter for three reasons: a car stereo or a TV won’t play the file, it takes too much space, or a program accepts one format only. A video works as a source too: the picture is dropped and only the sound is saved.

What opens and what you can save

  • Opens: MP3, WAV, M4A, AAC, FLAC, OGG and Opus, plus the sound of MP4, MOV, MKV and WebM videos.
  • Saves: MP3 plays on every device, WAV is uncompressed, M4A suits Apple devices, FLAC loses nothing and is about half the size of WAV, OGG gives a small file.
  • M4A and OGG rely on encoders built into the browser. When one is missing (M4A in Firefox, for example), its button is grey and suggests another format.
  • AIFF, WMA, AMR and AC3 files don’t open.

Voice messages to MP3

An iPhone voice memo is an M4A file, and chat apps often send voice messages as OGG. Open one, keep MP3 and save. The result plays on Windows, on Android and in an old car stereo.

How big the file gets

  • A minute of stereo music takes about 10 MB as WAV, 5–6 MB as FLAC and 1.4 MB as an MP3 at Good.
  • Best (320 kbps) suits music you keep. Standard (128 kbps) and Smaller file (64 kbps) are enough for speech.
  • WAV and FLAC lose nothing, so they have no quality setting. WAV can be 16-bit, like a CD, or 24-bit for editing.
  • Under the gear: 44.1 or 48 kHz (video editors usually expect 48 kHz) and mono, which halves a voice recording.

Before you convert

  • MP3 to WAV or FLAC won’t bring back detail the MP3 already lost. The file only gets bigger.
  • Files go one at a time: save the first, then open the next.
  • Need only part of a track? Cut it in the MP3 cutter first.
  • The audio converter is free, needs no account and sets no file-size limit of its own.
