How to cut MP3 and other audio files

Keep the chorus of a song, trim the silence off a voice memo or save one quote from an hour-long talk. Loud and quiet passages show on the wave, so you find the right second by eye and check it by ear.

Keep a part or cut it out

Drag the edges on the wave, then choose what happens to the selection:

  • Keep selected: only the marked part is saved.
  • Remove selected: the part is cut out, and the rest is joined without a click.
  • For an exact point, type a time such as 0:42.50 in Start or End.

Fade in and fade out

Switch on Smooth start and end, and the sound rises and settles instead of starting and stopping abruptly. Each fade lasts 0.1 to 10 seconds and is drawn on the wave. A fade never takes more than half of the result, so a short piece gets a shorter one.

Cut MP3 without losing quality

  • Keep a part of an MP3 with no fades and save it as MP3 (or an M4A as M4A), and the sound is copied as is. Nothing is encoded again, and it takes seconds.
  • Fades, Remove selected or another format mean the sound is encoded again. An MP3 then keeps the original’s bitrate (128 to 320 kbps) or gets 192 kbps.
