Convert MP3 to WAV

Some programs take WAV and nothing else. Turn the MP3 into a WAV they accept: the sound stays the same, only the way it is stored changes.

How it works

  1. Open the MP3A song, a jingle, a sample or a voice recording.
  2. Check the details16-bit at the MP3’s own rate is set. The gear has 44.1 or 48 kHz and mono.
  3. Save the WAVExpect a much larger file. That is normal for WAV.

Is it worth converting MP3 to WAV?

WAV stores the sound as plain samples with no compression. That makes it the safe choice for software that doesn’t want to decode anything: older editors, hardware samplers, CD burning programs, video and presentation tools, and many voice systems.

Typical reasons

  • An audio CD: burning programs want 16-bit, 44.1 kHz WAV, which is what most MP3s give.
  • A sampler, a drum machine or DJ software that loads WAV only.
  • A video or game project where every sound must be WAV.
  • A phone system or a doorbell that plays a WAV greeting.

What you get

  • PCM, 16-bit. An MP3 holds nothing a 24-bit file would keep, so 24-bit only doubles the size.
  • The MP3’s sample rate unless you pick another: 44.1 kHz for music, 48 kHz if the WAV goes into a video.
  • Measured: a one-minute 128 kbps MP3 of 0.96 MB became a 10.6 MB WAV.

It won’t sound better

The MP3 already dropped some detail when it was made, and a WAV can’t bring it back. You get the same sound in a format more programs accept, about ten times the size. If you have the original WAV or FLAC, use that instead.

Phone systems

Telephone systems often ask for 8 kHz mono. This page makes 44.1 or 48 kHz, so choose mono under the gear and let the phone system convert the rate when it imports the file.

Works everywhere

MP3 decoding and WAV writing work in Chrome, Edge, Firefox and Safari. Older Safari, before version 26, handles up to 15 minutes of sound.
