Webcam recorder

Film yourself with the laptop or phone camera, trim the clip and save it as MP4. The video stays on your device: we never receive or store it.

How it works

  1. Allow the cameraPress Start recording and allow the camera and the microphone.
  2. RecordRecording starts after a 3-2-1 countdown. Pause if you need, press Stop at the end.
  3. Trim and saveCut off the start and the end, then save the video.

Record video from your webcam or phone camera

A video message, an answer for a job application, a short vlog, a birthday greeting for a party you can’t get to. This webcam recorder works on a computer, an iPhone and an Android phone, with nothing to install.

Camera, microphone and quality

Have a built-in webcam and a USB one? Pick both in the lists. On a phone, switch between the front and the back camera. The picture comes at up to 30 frames per second.

  • 720p: the default, a lighter file.
  • 1080p: a sharper picture, if the webcam can do it.

Why the preview looks mirrored

The front camera is shown as a mirror, so it is easier to look into the lens. The saved video is the right way round: text on your T-shirt reads normally. The phone’s rear lens is never mirrored.

Tips for a better take

  • Face a window or a lamp. Light from behind turns you into a silhouette.
  • Raise the lens to eye level: stack a few books under the laptop.
  • Look into the lens, not at your own picture, to keep eye contact.
  • Watch the sound level while you speak, and move closer if it stays low.

From the last take to a file you can send

  • The clip opens for trimming as soon as you stop: keep the selected part or remove it.
  • A quick trim in the clip’s own format saves almost at once, since the video isn’t re-encoded.
  • Chrome, Edge and Safari give MP4. A browser that can’t write MP4 gives WebM.
  • Too big to send? Compress it for WhatsApp or email next.

A take cut short

The video is written to your device piece by piece while you film. If the browser crashes or the page reloads, come back and the page asks whether to recover the take. Where the browser can’t keep pieces on disk, a note asks you to keep the tab open until you save.
