Convert MKV to MP4

MKV plays in VLC, but iPhones, many TVs and video editors refuse it. Here the video moves into an MP4 box, usually in seconds and without re-saving the picture. The file stays on your device: it is not sent to a server or stored.

How it works

  1. Open the MKVA film, a series episode or an OBS recording. This page takes MKV files only.
  2. Look at the speed line“Instant, same quality” means a repack. Otherwise the picture is re-saved as H.264.
  3. Save the MP4The name stays: holiday.mkv becomes holiday.mp4, and the MKV is left as it was.

How MKV to MP4 works here

MKV (Matroska) is a box that holds almost any picture and sound. Streamers record OBS into it because a half-written MKV survives a crash, and many films come as .mkv too. Inside there is usually H.264 or HEVC video, which MP4 holds just as well, so most of the time nothing is re-encoded.

Remux or re-save

  • H.264 picture with AAC or MP3 sound: moved as it is. Measured: a 10-minute, 244 MB H.264/AAC recording was repacked in 1.4 seconds on a MacBook Pro (M1 Pro), and the MP4 came out 0.1% larger.
  • AV1, VP9 or HEVC picture: re-saved as H.264, the codec every device plays. This takes about as long as the video plays, or less on a fast computer.
  • Opus or Vorbis sound: only the sound is re-saved, as AAC. That part is quick.

What goes into the MP4

  • The picture, the main sound track and the full length.
  • Left out: subtitles, a second audio language or commentary, and chapters. Only the first video and the main sound are written.

Films with AC3 or DTS sound

Many films carry Dolby Digital (AC3) or DTS sound. Browsers can’t decode it, so such an MKV can’t become an MP4 here. The page tells you right after you open the file and names the sound format. A desktop program such as HandBrake converts these.

Browsers and big files

  • A repack works in any browser that opens the page.
  • Re-saving HEVC needs a browser that reads it: Safari, or Chrome and Edge with hardware decoding.
  • Opus sound needs an AAC encoder, which Firefox and Chrome on Linux don’t have. Chrome or Edge on Windows, macOS or Android, and Safari, have one.

When to leave it as MKV

  • You watch on a computer with VLC or mpv, which play MKV fine.
  • One file must keep several languages or subtitles.
  • In OBS itself, File → Remux Recordings does the same repack.
