Convert MOV to MP4

Convert MOV to MP4 so an iPhone or camera clip opens on any computer, phone or TV. Many files are ready in a second at exactly the same quality. The video stays yours: it is not sent to a server or stored.

How it works

  1. Choose the MOV fileFrom your iPhone, a camera card or a computer. MP4 is already selected.
  2. See how it will convert“Instant, same quality” means the video is only repacked. Otherwise the picture is re-saved as H.264.
  3. Save the MP4IMG_0042.mov becomes IMG_0042.mp4. Open it on Windows, Android, a smart TV or in an upload form.

How the conversion works

MOV is Apple’s video format. iPhones, many cameras and Mac screen recordings save it. Apple devices play it, but Android phones, older TVs, some Windows apps and upload forms expect MP4. Converting gives you a file that simply works there.

What is inside a MOV file

MOV and MP4 are both containers: boxes for the picture and the sound. Inside an iPhone MOV the picture is usually HEVC (High Efficiency) or H.264 (Most Compatible). H.264 plays almost everywhere, HEVC does not.

Two ways it can go

  • H.264 inside: the video moves into an MP4 box without re-saving. Instant, same quality, same size.
  • HEVC inside: the picture is re-saved as H.264 so any device can play it. This takes a while, and the file can come out larger.
  • The sound is kept as it is when MP4 allows it. Otherwise only the sound is re-saved, which is quick.

Why an iPhone video won’t play on Windows

Windows needs an extra HEVC codec for iPhone videos filmed in High Efficiency. Without it you get sound over a black screen. MP4 with H.264 is the one combination every device understands.

On iPhone, Mac or Windows

  • iPhone or iPad: open the page in Safari and choose the clip from Photos or Files. Safari reads HEVC, so every iPhone video works.
  • Mac: Safari, Chrome and Edge all work, with nothing to install.
  • Windows: if the page says it can’t read the video, install “HEVC Video Extensions” from the Microsoft Store, or convert on a Mac or iPhone.

Tips

  • Need a smaller file? Pick 1080p or 720p under “Picture size” in the gear.
  • To avoid MOV trouble later, set the iPhone camera to Most Compatible in Settings → Camera → Formats.

What you get

  • An MP4 with the same name, the same length and the same sound.
  • Your MOV file, untouched.
