How to make a GIF from a video

A GIF plays by itself, over and over, almost anywhere: in chats, on websites, in slides and on help pages. That makes it handy for a reaction, a funny moment or a short how-to.

Pick the part

  • The first 10 seconds are selected at the start, or the whole video if it is shorter.
  • Drag the handles on the frame strip, or type the start and end times.
  • A GIF can be up to 30 seconds long. Three to six seconds is usually enough.

Choose the size

  • Small: 320 pixels on the long side, for chats.
  • Medium: 480 pixels, good for most uses.
  • Large: 720 pixels, for websites and slides.
  • A wide video gets that width, a vertical one that height. The GIF is never made bigger than the video itself.

Convert MP4 to GIF at a size you can send

The expected file size is shown while you choose and changes with every setting. Over 15 MB, you see a warning. A smaller size or a shorter part fixes it.

Colours, smoothness and looping

Each frame gets its own palette of 256 colours, and gradients are softened with dithering. The GIF loops by default. Under the gear, Smoothness offers 10, 15 or 24 frames per second, and Play once stops the loop.

Tips for a lighter GIF

  • Calm shots make lighter GIFs than shaky ones full of motion.
  • 10 frames per second is enough for a slideshow-like clip. Keep 24 for fast movement.
  • Crop away the edges first if only part of the frame matters.
  • A GIF has no sound. To keep the sound, trim the video and send it as a video.

How long it takes

Turning a video to GIF takes a few seconds to a minute, depending on the length, the size and the device. You see the progress and can cancel at any time.
