FLAC to MP3 at 320 kbps

Turn a lossless FLAC track into an MP3 that a car stereo, a phone or the Music app plays. Your file stays with you: we never receive it or keep a copy, and the FLAC is left as it was.

FLAC files only · other formats open in “Audio converter”

How it works

  1. Open the FLACA track bought on Bandcamp or Qobuz, a CD rip, a vinyl transfer.
  2. Best is already set320 kbps is the most an MP3 holds. Pick Good (192) to fit more songs.
  3. Save the MP3Then open the next track. Files go one at a time.

From a lossless archive to a file that plays anywhere

FLAC is what Bandcamp gives you as a lossless download, what Exact Audio Copy and XLD write from a CD, and what hi-res stores sell. It packs a WAV into about half the space and loses nothing. MP3 throws away sound you are unlikely to hear, so a 320 kbps copy weighs about a third of the FLAC.

Why people convert FLAC to MP3

  • Many car stereos and older players read MP3 and nothing else.
  • iTunes and the Music app on a Mac or an iPhone won’t import FLAC.
  • A phone holds about three times as many songs at 320 kbps, five times as many at 192.
  • Some DJ apps and upload forms accept MP3 only.

Size and sound, measured

  • A minute of 320 kbps MP3 is 2.4 MB whatever the FLAC: our one-minute 4 MB test file came out at 2.4 MB.
  • Title, artist and album tags carry over to the MP3.
  • Best is the default because people who keep FLAC care how it sounds. Most listeners can’t tell 320 kbps from the source.
  • A 24-bit FLAC at 96 or 192 kHz becomes a 48 kHz MP3. MP3 can’t store more.

On a Mac

Chrome, Edge and Firefox decode FLAC well. Safari often says it can and then fails on the real sound, so the page test-plays the first tenth of a second before you start. If that fails, it tells you to open the file in another browser. On a Mac, Chrome is the easy way to convert FLAC to MP3 without installing anything.

Keep the FLAC

  • The MP3 is a listening copy. Turning it back into FLAC won’t bring back what was dropped.
  • Need another bitrate later? Make it from the FLAC again, not from the MP3.
  • For an archive, FLAC stays the better choice.
