How to convert M4A to MP3 on iPhone, Mac or Windows

M4A is the format Apple uses for everyday audio. It sounds fine, but older players, some Android apps and many upload forms take only MP3.

Where M4A files come from

  • Voice Memos on iPhone and Mac saves every recording as M4A.
  • Songs bought in iTunes and tracks ripped on a Mac are usually M4A.
  • Call recorders and dictaphone apps often use it too.
  • M4A files with Apple Lossless (ALAC) sound can’t be read in a browser yet. The page tells you when you open one.

Open the file on your device

  • Android: pick the file from Downloads or your recorder’s folder.
  • Mac or Windows: drag the M4A onto this page. There is nothing to install.
  • The MP3 keeps the original name, ending in .mp3.

Pick the MP3 quality

Behind the gear next to Save you can also make a recording mono, which is all a single voice needs.

  • Good, 192 kbps: the default. To most ears music sounds like the original.
  • Best, 320 kbps: for music you care about. The file is about two-thirds bigger.
  • Standard, 128 kbps: fine for speech, podcasts and lectures.
  • Smaller file, 64 kbps: the lightest choice for long voice recordings.

Does converting lose quality?

M4A usually holds AAC sound, which is already compressed, and MP3 compresses it again. At 192 kbps or more the difference is very hard to hear. Pick a quality at least as high as the original, and always convert from the original M4A, not from a copy.

When you don’t need MP3

Every iPhone, Mac and modern Android phone plays M4A, and so do most browsers. Convert M4A to MP3 when a car stereo, an old player, a website or someone on another device asks for it. The audio converter also works the other way, turning MP3, WAV or FLAC into M4A.
