PDF to text

Convert PDF to text in one go: copy every word in one tap or save it as a plain .txt file. The PDF stays with you; we never receive it.

One PDF file, any size

Your privacy comes first

Your contracts, passport scans and family videos stay yours. No one but you gets to see them.

  • We never store your files

They don’t even reach us: your phone or computer does the work. Nothing to delete later.

  • 100% free

No daily limits, no file-size cap, no paid Pro plan.

  • No sign-up

No account to create, no email to give. No account, nothing to hack.

How it works

  1. Open a PDFPick the file, and its text appears page by page.
  2. Check the textScroll through it, then press Copy to put all of it on the clipboard.
  3. Or save a TXTSave the text as a .txt file that opens in any editor.

Extract text from a PDF: what comes out

Selecting text in a PDF viewer is fiddly: lines jump, and the selection stops at the edge of a page. Here PDF to text conversion takes the whole file, even 300 pages, and shows the text ready to copy.

What you get

  • The text of every page, with a line break where each line of the page ends.
  • A blank line between pages, so you can see where each one starts.
  • A character and page count, so you know nothing was missed.
  • A .txt file in UTF-8: Cyrillic, Chinese, Arabic and accents come out right.

Scanned pages have no text

A scan or a phone photo saved as PDF is a picture of a page, with no text behind it. There is no OCR here, so the tool marks such pages instead of handing you an empty file. A quick test: if you can’t select a single word in a viewer, it is a scan.

Columns and tables

The text comes out in the order the PDF stores it, which is usually the reading order. Pages in two or three columns, tables and text boxes may come out a little mixed up. Check them before you paste.

What is left out

  • Pictures, fonts, colours and layout: you get plain text only.
  • Bold, italics and headings become ordinary text.
  • The PDF itself is not changed.

Copy text from a PDF on a phone

Open this page in Safari or Chrome and choose the PDF from Files or Downloads. Copy puts the whole text on the clipboard, ready to paste into notes, a chat or an email.

Locked PDFs

A PDF that asks for a password to open has to be unlocked first with Unlock PDF.
