How it works

  1. Open the MP4A recorded talk, an interview, a music video or a screen recording with a voice-over.
  2. WAV is already set16-bit, at the video’s own sample rate (usually 48 kHz). Mono stays mono.
  3. Save audioThe picture is dropped. The video file itself is not changed.

Why convert MP4 to WAV

The sound inside an MP4 is almost always AAC, a compressed format. Players handle it fine. Many sound tools want plain PCM in a WAV file instead: it loads at once, cuts to the exact sample and is never compressed again on the way.

Who asks for WAV

  • Audacity, GarageBand, Reaper and Pro Tools, for noise removal or level fixes.
  • Transcription and subtitle services that list WAV as the preferred upload.
  • Samplers, DJ software and game engines that accept WAV only.
  • Voice-over work, when the sound goes back into a video editor later.

How big the file gets

  • A minute of 48 kHz stereo takes about 11.5 MB, roughly ten times the AAC it came from.
  • Measured: a 30-second 720p MP4 of 12.2 MB with 44.1 kHz AAC gave a 5.3 MB WAV in under a second.
  • A WAV file can’t pass 4 GB, which is about six hours of 48 kHz stereo.

What WAV can’t do

It can’t bring back detail the AAC dropped when the video was recorded. What it gives you is a copy that loses nothing more, however often you edit and save it. For plain listening, an MP3 is smaller and plays everywhere.

Limits

  • The sound has to be decoded: Chrome and Edge can, Firefox from version 130, Safari from 26.
  • The main sound track is taken from start to end. To keep a part, trim the video first.
  • A video without sound can’t give a WAV. The page says so as soon as it opens.
