Redact a PDF

Redact PDF documents before they leave your hands: black out names, account numbers and signatures. On saving, the text under each box is removed from the file, not just covered.

One PDF file, any size

Your privacy comes first

Your contracts, passport scans and family videos stay yours. No one but you gets to see them.

  • We never store your files

They don’t even reach us: your phone or computer does the work. Nothing to delete later.

  • 100% free

No daily limits, no file-size cap, no paid Pro plan.

  • No sign-up

No account to create, no email to give. No account, nothing to hack.

How it works

  1. Open a PDFPick the document on your phone or computer.
  2. Draw black boxesDrag across each part to hide, page by page. Move a box or pull its corner to fit.
  3. Save the copyPress Save. The redacted copy goes to your downloads and your original stays untouched.

How to redact PDF text so it is really gone

Covering words is not enough. When you save, every page with a box is redrawn as a picture with the black burned in. The text under a box is no longer in the file: it can’t be copied, found by search or uncovered by moving the box. Your document stays with you; we never receive it.

Why a black shape in a normal editor fails

A shape drawn in a regular PDF editor sits on top of the words. They stay in the file, so anyone can select and copy them or drag the shape away. That is how details leak from documents people thought were blacked out.

What people usually black out

  • Names, phone numbers and home addresses.
  • Account, card and passport numbers.
  • Signatures and handwritten notes.
  • Amounts and dates the receiver doesn’t need.

What happens to the rest

Pages without boxes are copied as they are, and their text still selects and searches. Pages with boxes become pictures at 200 dpi: small print stays readable, but you can no longer select their text. The file may grow a little, since a picture of a page weighs more than its text. Put boxes only on the pages that need them.

Working with boxes

  • Drag across the page, or just tap it, to place a solid black box.
  • Drag a box to move it and pull its corner to resize it.
  • On a keyboard, the arrows move the selected box and Delete removes it.
  • Clear everything from a page with one button.

Leaf through once more before saving

Only what sits under a box is removed. A number printed on three pages needs three boxes. The copy is saved with “-redacted” at the end of its name, so you won’t mix it up with the original. Keep the original if you may need the full text: the copy can’t give back what was removed.
